Fishing at Loch Ness
Fishing the Rivers & Hill Lochs in South Loch Ness
South Loch Ness has been called The Inverness Lake District so numerous are the lochs in this beautiful wilderness area known as Stratherrick in South Loch Ness. The area stretches from the lochside village of Dores at the northern end of Loch Ness to Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness.
Those of you staying at our self catering apartment at the Highland Club Scotland, fishing on Loch Ness is free, and you can fish from within the grounds of the Highland Club.
We realise that many of you just want to have a day out by the lochside and enjoy the scenery whilst you dip your rod onto the loch and maybe have a picnic at the same time. This is a marvellous way to spend some of your holiday in the Highlands and we thoroughly recommend it for it's therapeutic properties. Fishing for wild brown trout is free from most riverbanks and lochsides and just about anywhere on the banks of Loch Ness, but if in doubt we will be pleased to advise you.
For the more serious fishermen, the list below is only a brief description of what is available in the South Loch Ness area. For a more detailed list and further information please ask us we will be pleased to give you addresses and phone numbers of local experts.
There is some useful information here to help minimise disruption to your fishing pleasure from biting insects, Midges and Ticks.
LOCH KNOCKIE This is one of the better lochs, and with the right conditions it will produce a mixed basket of fish from 10ozs to 1lb. Fly Only.
LOCH BRAN Along with Brown Trout, Loch Bran is reputed to hold Arctic Char and Ferox. No exceptional catches but a good days sport is rewarded with hard fighting native brownies. Fly Only
LOCH NAN LANN A great beginners loch with an abundance of smaller fish in the surface layer on which to practice fly casting with always the possibility of hooking a Ferox or Char. Fly Only
LOCH KILLIN A deep loch with plenty of smaller brownies near the surface and Ferox deeper down being taken mostly by spinning which is permitted. A good loch to take a newcomer to fly fish or spin since there are always good catches of free taking trout. Bank fishing only available on this loch.
LOCH MHOR We have seen Osprey take some very good fish from Loch Mhor and occasionally some of the more dedicated fishermen have also been successful. Mostly small brown trout are to be had.
A Ghillie is available by prior arrangement.
Fly Rods and tackle are available for sale/hire from the Witebridge Hotel.
Rod and Reel hire per day. Casts and flies are available for sale, It is advisable to book early during May/June.
SALMON FISHING ON LOCH NESS (including ghillie and equipment) can be hired per day.
ROBBIES TROUT FISHERY The Fishery is situated only 4 miles from the seaside town of Nairn and 16 miles from Inverness. From Nairn take the A939 towards Grantown for 2 miles and then turn right onto the B9101 to Cawder. Follow this road for about a mile and it is signposted as Geddes Trout fishery on the righthand side of the crossroads. The Fishery is located at the Geddes Dams which were built in 1870 as the main water supply for the town of Nairn. It lies in quiet secluded woodland surroundings and comprises of three separate Lochs, one for bait and two for fly fishing. The insect life at the Fishery is abundant and creates a great challenge for the "Match the Hatch" type of fly fisher. The record catch to date is 14½ lb.
At the Fishery Hut, rods can be hired. snacks and drinks are available, and there is a B-B-Q where you can cook your own food. The facilities also include toilets.
The Fishery is stocked on a weekly basis to ensure a good continuity of fish and on the 5½ and 2½ acre fly lochs you can fish for Blues, Brownies, Tigers and the hard fighting Rainbow. Fishing is from the bank, platforms or by boat. For further information and permits contact: Robbie MacLennan on mobile : 0403 128 631or visit their website at: Robbie's Trout Fishery
