Self catering Holiday Home in Fort Augustus Abbey

Fort Augustus - Gateway to Loch Ness. The entrance to our Old School apartment

We look forward to welcoming visitors, to our newly renovated first floor self catering holiday home, "Old School 11"formerly the Maths class in the Old School at Fort Augustus Abbey. This magnificent category A listed building stands in 20 acres of beautifully maintained private garden grounds at the southern end of Loch Ness.

The Abbey is surrounded on three sides by waters of the Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness and the river Tarff.  Shops, restaurants and bars of Fort Augustus are just a few hundred yards from the apartment grounds. The Boathouse restaurant overhangs Loch Ness just a hundred yards away within the Abbey grounds.

The Old School apartment is part one of a three part renovation project at St Benedict's Abbey. Our apartment in first phase was completed in December 2006, but part of the abbey is still being worked on but this will not disturb visitors to the Old School.

You are, quite literally, able to dip your toes into Loch Ness, just a few yards from the apartment. You can relax in the gardens and acres of lawns and mature trees which flow through long terraces and broad flights of Victorian steps right down to the waters edge. To experience Loch Ness in this tranquil and truly awe inspiring setting, just as the generations of St Benedictine monks before you must have done, will leave you with a holiday experience that you will remember and cherish forever.

This fabulous category "A" listed historic building is without doubt one of the most unique holiday destinations in Scotland. certainly it is unique to Loch Ness, there really is nothing to compare in the area in terms of history, location and quality.

This accommodation will exceed your holiday expectations, such is the standard and quality we have set and that we know you appreciate. Those of you that have stayed in our holiday cottages in the past will know that our standards are extremely high, as are our requirements for comfort, superb locations, value for money and attention to detail.

History of Fort Augustus
The original Gaelic name for Fort Augustus was Cille Chumein named after St Cummein who built a church here. The village today takes its name from the fort that was built after the 1715 Jacobite uprising.

Fort Augustus AbbeyHistory of the Abbey
Built in 1876 it is one of the oldest buildings in Fort Augustus, and certainly one of the most impressive building anywhere around Loch Ness. It is built on the site of the original Hanovarian fort named after William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, the original foundations still form part of the buildings today, though almost nothing remains of the original fort. For many years a part of the Abbey was run as a school, by the monks, but it was closed some years ago due to financial pressures and when finally, the Monks closed the Abbey as a place of worship the buildings were sold. There have been sightings of the Loch Ness Monster from the grounds of Fort Augustus Abbey by the monks that lived here, so you cant really argue with that!

The Abbey today
Now, Fort Augustus Abbey, a Grade A listed building, has been painstakingly and tastefully renovated and converted into high quality accommodation, in the form of luxury apartments and riverside cottages.
